We know that we have a good health service in the East Midlands which patients and the public are generally satisfied with. Life expectancy in the region is at an all time high and we have made real improvements in recent years to provide health services which are safer, more accessible and of better quality.
But we want to be better than good. We want to be excellent.
In June 2008 we published From Evidence to Excellence, our vision for transforming the NHS in the East Midlands over the next 10 years. In it we set out ambitious proposals for the local NHS to make sure we deliver health services of the highest quality which meet the needs of everyone living in the East Midlands.
We want a local NHS which delivers:
- A better experience for the patient
- Accessible services
- Safe and high quality services
- Best value for money
- Improvements to people’s health
- Real influence for clinicians and patients to shape services.
Our vision was created with the help of hundreds of doctors, nurses and other clinical staff working on the frontline caring for local patients on a daily basis. Our vision also drew on the experience and views of thousands of local patients and members of the public who told us what was important to them from a high quality, local health service.
Work to make improvements is being clinically led and influenced by the views of patients and the public. We have formed a set of clinical reference groups which bring together experts in their field to develop better models for services and make the case for change. Uniquely, we are the only region in the country which has set up similar groups at county level where grass roots changes can be tailored to the needs of local communities more effectively.

However, for some services we have agreed that we need to develop one system of care for the whole region and for these areas we have set up dedicated project teams with expertise drawn from across all the NHS organisations in the East Midlands to take this forward.

The models of care which are being developed by our clinical leaders are being implemented through the commissioning process. The chief executives of all our primary care trusts are taking active leadership roles and working collaboratively to ensure the right services and systems of care are being delivered for their communities.
