Enhanced recovery programme

Enhanced recovery, often referred to as rapid recovery, is a new, evidence-based model of care that creates fitter patients who recover faster from major surgery. It is the modern way for treating patients where day surgery is not appropriate. Patients are fitter sooner and ready to go home earlier with reduced complications. The model of care is safe and effective, ensuring patients are partners in their care - focusing on less invasive surgical techniques, pain relief and the management of fluids and diet, which help patients to recover better post-operatively with no additional burden on primary or social care.

On November 4, 2010, NHS East Midlands held its first Enhanced Recovery regional event at the Walkers Stadium in Leicester. Details of the presentations from the day can be downloaded below.

Enhanced recovery events

The Enhanced Recovery Events allow Trusts from the East Midlands to learn from each other, share best practice and locally developed documentation (pathways, data collection tools and patient information etc).

The Marketplace section of the morning allows teams to showcase their experience of Enhanced Recovery via a poster display and gives an opportunity to speak to members of the teams on a 1-to-1 basis, to discuss learning points and issues.

It is an excellent opportunity to Network with colleagues around the East Midlands and has proved very successful in the previous events held for Gynaecology and Colorectal.
