Right care

We have a duty to spend public money responsibly to bring the most benefit to as many patients as possible. Medical knowledge and technology is constantly evolving to provide better treatments and advice. We need to concentrate resources on procedures and treatments which will bring recognised health benefits to patients. We need to concentrate resources on procedures which have a recognised evidence base of bringing significant benefit to patients.

The objectives of the regional right care programme are to:

  • Improve the value of interventions for patients: By 2014 Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMS) will be used to inform decision-making

  • Free up resources to focus on high-value interventions: Funding for lower clinical value procedures will be reduced significantly by 2014

  • Increase equity of healthcare provision across the East Midlands: The variance between highest and lowest volume  of procedure activity for each condition across the region is lessened

  • Develop an evidence based best practice culture: By 2014, clinical behaviour towards value-based interventions will be demonstrated

A workshop was held on January 11, 2011 bringing together commissioners, providers, secondary care clinicians, GPs and patient representatives. You can download presentations from the event below.

The East Midlands Right Care team is organising a series of 'planning labs' to help commissioners, service managers and clinicians understand variation in performance/outcomes and steps which can be taken to address this.

The first planning lab is taking place on 10 May. It will review pathways for musculo-skeletal (MSK) services. A number of national speakers will update attendees on the national Right Care agenda, the patients’ perspective on MSK services and how other areas have re-modelled MSK services. Both lead clinicians and General practitioners have been invited to shape the future of MSK services in the East Midlands. The agenda for this event is available below.

Other planning labs taking place in 2011/2012 will review ophthalmology, ENT and obs/gynae services.
